Are these texts intended for translation or replacement? YES, should be replaced by its translation according to the language selected. If so, where are they stored, where should the translation be stored? It should be inserted to Pootle and translated via Pootle (translation.cacert.org), I can translate them, but I do not know the replace mechanism. |
@alkas: Of course, these texts should be translated. And I can help with translations for German, French and possibly Italian. My questions were meant more in principle: - Were these texts intended for translation when the site was created, i.e. are the relevant technical foundations in place? - If this is the case, where are they actually stored? (They should be in pootle, of course; but there is also software where strings are stored in github or similar, for example) |
When the site was created, these texts didn't exist. They are a part of update the website, and thus should be treated as other texts on that page, which are already translated (via Pootle). I do not know the mechanism of how translated texts replace the English texts, So I cannot say where (and whether) the translated text are duplicitly saved. However, it must work for texts which were not changed, and are located on the same page. |

To find out more: - Who could know where this textes should be translated? - When was the website updated? - Who updated the website? Hopefully, with answers of one ore more of this questions, we could find out more. |

It seems somebody have to put new texts to the Pootle to be able to get translated. It should be the author of the changed page, obviously. I think the "New client cert" was modified by Brian (bmcc@c.o). I checked the Pootle just now |

and no new texts are there. |

Pootle has no admin and is a unmaintained piece of software. I have not found any documentation on how to transfer texts or how the CAcert development cycle for translations is meant to be done. I think transfering translations manually is error prone. It should be automated together with deployments to a test instance. I imagine something like this: - code change is created locally by a developer - code is pushed to a Git branch (on https://code.cacert.org/) - a pull request is created - someone (usually from the software team or critical team) approves and merges the pull request to the main branch - a webhook triggers an update in the translation system (I have no clue whether Pootle supports webhooks, Weblate would support it) - translations are later pushed back to Git and are merged via the same PR workflow At the moment we are lucky if we have at least code changes with english texts and the critical team deploys these into production and on test systems. The software development lifecycle, including the translation steps is not properly defined (as far as I know). |

In the old times (2013 and following), I did a lot of translations. If I remember well, Ted knew, how it went from translation sysem to the website. |

Ahm, sorry, no. I know how translation works for CATS, but that does not use pootle... |

Some old bugs with information about the translation proces: https://bugs.cacert.org/view.php?id=985 (implemention of pootle) https://bugs.cacert.org/view.php?id=1324 (uploading text messages) https://bugs.cacert.org/view.php?id=1127 (makefile) https://bugs.cacert.org/view.php?id=1110#c3390 (how it works) Maybe some of the notes there gives some information about the transfering. It was NEOatNHNG who set up pootle in 2012. Maybe he can still be reached? |

jandd wrote at https://bugs.cacert.org/view.php?id=1576#c6394 "Pootle has no admin and is a unmaintained piece of software." Found just this: "I don't have experience with Pootle or Weblate, but I'd volunteer as SysAdmin for it if we choose to host it ourselves and were in need for additional admins." source: Sascha Ternes at https://lists.cacert.org/wws/arc/cacert-translations/2023-10/msg00002.html |

I found this note from 2023: https://lists.cacert.org/wws/arc/cacert-translations/2023-10/msg00003.html "A Pootle administrator will not help because the upstream project is dead and requires Python 2 which is end of life already. Setting up Weblate requires some surrounding components and is not trivial. If we find a compassionate admin with Python web application knowledge we could host it ourselves. Otherwise I would strongly recommend to use https://hosted.weblate.org " As apart of me nearly no one translated in pootle in the last 5 -10 years, we can also moove to the hosted weblate service as suggested by Jan 3 years ago. For me the question is: What is easier and takes less manpower: moove to weblate and connect weblate with our systems or the git way described above? |
