Summary | 0000202: broken index.txt
Description | CAcert sometimes has the problem that the certificate issueing system for a specific (class1 or class3) root certificates breaks, due to a problem in the relevant. How often: The problem happens about once every 1-2 months. Detection: It can be easily detected by sending a valid CSR with both the class1 and the class3 certificate to the main system, and see, whether both are giving valid certificates, or "Your certificate request could not be processed" Workaround: Asking the system administrator to edit the broken index.txt and fix the broken lines. That fixes the problem for another month. Abuse potential: The problem seems to be triggered randomly, it does not seem to be triggered by the users´s input (CSR, ...), so it does not seem to be useful for a denial of service attack. Analysis: The index.txt has a special text-format, which is parsed by OpenSSL CA on each run. If the format is broken, then the CA doesn´t work anymore. This is the normal format of 2 lines in the index.txt: V 251202003606Z 01 unknown /C=AU/ST=Some-State/O=Internet Widgits Pty Ltd/CN=CAcert V 351130013000Z 0A unknown /O=CAcert Inc./OU=http://www.CAcert.org/CN=CAcert Class 3 Root This are 2 broken lines (slightly anonymized): V 061008204631Z 0226BE unknown /CN=example.st T User/emailAddress=user@domain.org So there seems to be something missing. In this example, it seems as if there was just something missing from the beginning of the second line, but we also had cases, where the beginning of one certificate line, and the end of a second certificate line were together in one line.

Possible fixes: 1) fix OpenSSL 2) dynamically generate index.txt |
The attached ca.c is a try to rewrite the whole database part. It seems to work correctly for our application, but I expect a couple of negative side-effects on things like revocation, ... |
A deeper analysis of the problem itself revealed that only the last line is affected, the second-last line is intact. In the last line, always the beginning characters are missing, but the things that are missing are affecting different numbers of fields. The amount of characters missing is always different. No block-size boundaries (512 Bytes) were detected. |
2 other statistical details about the problem: The amount of bytes that are missing at the beginning of the last line is ranging between 41 and 52 bytes. The frequency of the problem happening seems to be about every 1000 - 1200 issued certificates |
There is no definite freq, index.txt was fixed and it was broken again within 6 hours. |
I created a patch against the ca.c, which adds the option -directupdate , so that the new functionality is dynamically available at runtime: openssl ca -directupdate .... |
Applied suggested changes in bug 275, hopefully that will fix this bug. |
Could you please provide the source of the locking algorithm? |
The problem was solved and never happened again. |
